Start the Adventure in Reading (STAIR) uses community volunteers to help second grade public school children in the Greater New Orleans area who were affected by Hurricane Katrina and need extra help in reading and language skills. STAIR has been providing children with one-on-one tutoring throughout the school year for the past 23 years and has helped many second-grade students who are at risk of academic failure. STAIR increases the reading level of “skill deficient” children and boosts each child’s sense of self esteem by providing a program which expands each child’s knowledge of self and the world of reading. The program provides a caring environment that promotes a more meaningful dialogue among multi-ethnic volunteers, children, teachers, and parents.
