MAZDA ‘SEES RED’ ABOUT IMPAIRED DRIVING
– Exclusive Auto Manufacturer Sponsoring MADD Safety Campaign –

IRVINE, Calif. – Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) sees red… that is, red ribbons attached to vehicles nationwide to remind motorists to drive safe, sober and buckled-up this holiday season. MNAO announced today that it is the exclusive automobile manufacturer sponsoring the 2003 Tie One On For Safety campaign of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD).

Mazda is asking holiday drivers to tie a red MADD ribbon to a visible location on their vehicles to show their commitment to safety and to remind others to do the same. The campaign runs during the heavily traveled holiday season from Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day. Mazda dealers nationwide and MADD’s 600 local chapters will distribute the ribbons to the public to promote this important safety message.

“MADD is grateful for Mazda’s support of this year’s Tie One On For Safety holiday ribbon campaign. Thanks to Mazda’s commitment to safe and sober driving, we will be able to disseminate our lifesaving message and distribute red ribbons to even more Americans this holiday season,” said Wendy J. Hamilton, national president, MADD.

“This is a great holiday safety program for Mazda. It raises awareness of the serious issue of impaired driving and calls for people to buckle-up. Plus, Mazda dealers have the opportunity to be a part of a life-saving cause in their local communities,” said Jim O’Sullivan, president and CEO, MNAO.

Last year alone, alcohol-related traffic crashes killed more than 17,400 people, an average of one alcohol-related fatality every 30 minutes. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that alcohol was involved in 41 percent of all fatal crashes in 2002. And 77 percent of the fatally injured intoxicated drivers were not wearing their safety belts.

Takata, a safety belt manufacturer and provider of integrated safety systems and a supplier to Mazda, is the premiere sponsor of MADD’s Tie One On For Safety campaign. In addition to Mazda and Takata, Budget Rent A Car System, Inc. is a 2003 campaign sponsor.

Mazda North American Operations is responsible for the sales and marketing, customer parts and service support of Mazda vehicles in the United States. Headquartered in Irvine, Calif., MNAO has more than 700 dealerships nationwide.

Founded in 1980, MADD is a non-profit organization with 2 million members and supporters nationwide. MADD’s mission is to stop drunk driving, support the victims of this violent crime and prevent underage drinking.
