MAZDA FOUNDATION AWARDS SCHOLARSHIPS TO NATIVE AMERICAN STUDENT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT PEMBROKE
--Scholarship provides full tuition, room and board for two students--
PEMBROKE--The University of North Carolina at Pembroke (UNCP) today announced the names of two Mazda Foundation scholarship recipients. The scholarship includes full tuition, room and board for the 2000-2001 school year.
The Mazda Scholarship enabled UNCP to select two outstanding Native American high school graduates who intend to major in Business Administration. Both Mazda Scholars, Deanna R. Bullard and Jessica Lynn Caulder, were chosen based on their academic excellence, leadership potential and desire to succeed.
"Mazda is pleased to present full scholarships for two talented Native American students, Deanna R. Bullard and Jessica Lynn Caulder, to attend The University of North Carolina at Pembroke," said Richard Beattie, president and CEO of Mazda North American Operations and chairman of the Mazda Foundation (USA), Inc. "UNCP, located in the heart of Lumbee Indian country, fosters an ideal university atmosphere where diverse interests and multicultural heritages are incorporated into every aspect of student life. We at Mazda are proud to support these superior students in their education endeavors there," Mr. Beattie added. At a university ceremony tonight, Barbara Nocera, director of the Mazda Foundation, will present the students with Certificates of Achievement as symbols of Mazda's commitment to their education.
Dr. Allen C. Meadors, chancellor at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke said, "We embrace Mazda's commitment to improve the quality of life in the communities in which it does business. By providing scholarships to quality Native American students, Mazda is helping to shape a better future for this important segment of society."
This is the first year the Mazda Foundation has partnered with The University of North Carolina at Pembroke. UNCP is one of 16 constituent institutions in the University of North Carolina system. It offers baccalaureate degrees in more than 50 disciplines, along with masters degrees in 14 programs. UNCP has an enrollment of more than 3,000 students. A Comprehensive I institution, UNCP is committed to the advancement, growth, and development of its students within the context of liberal arts, science, pre-professional and professional studies.
The Mazda Foundation (USA), Inc. was established in 1990 to demonstrate Mazda's commitment to improving the quality of life in the communities in which they do business. In addition to education, the Mazda Foundation supports charitable organizations that promote literacy, environmental conservation, social welfare and cross-cultural understanding.
